Annual Conference of the Irish Association of Law Teachers, 2022
The annual conference of the IALT will take place at Queen’s University Belfast from Friday 11th – Saturday 12th November 2022.
The theme of this year’s conference is Law’s Capacity for Shaping the World: Inclusion, Exclusion and Omission.
It is intended that the conference will be held in person on the campus of Queen’s University Belfast.
Conference Format
The IALT conference is famous for its friendly and supportive atmosphere. Many speakers use the opportunity to present work in progress.
The conference will begin on the QUB campus on Friday afternoon with registration from 4pm and a round of parallel sessions commencing at 5pm followed by a buffet dinner in the Great Hall at Queen’s.
On Saturday morning and afternoon there will be further parallel sessions on campus.
The plenary lecture and roundtable will also take place on the Saturday. The AGM of the Association will be held at lunchtime on the Saturday, at which time the Council for the 2022-2023 year will be elected.
On Saturday evening a Gala Dinner will be held at the Europa Hotel in Belfast.
Call for Papers, Panels and Posters
We welcome papers, panels and posters on all areas of legal research and on any issue relating to legal education or other issues affecting legal scholarship. Presentations are not restricted to the theme of the conference, although abstracts engaging with the theme are of course also welcome.
Participants are also encouraged to propose panels addressing specific themes in any area of law or law teaching.
Abstracts (250 words maximum) should be submitted for consideration here.
The deadline for submissions is 16 th September 2022.
Venue and Accommodation
The conference will take place on the campus of Queen’s University Belfast on University Road. The Friday evening dinner will be held on campus.
The Saturday evening Gala dinner will be hosted in the Europa Hotel, Belfast.
The Europa hotel is offering a limited number of rooms at a special conference rate of £95 per night single occupancy or £105 per night double occupancy. To avail of this special rate, attendees must book their rooms directly with the hotel before 1 October 2022. Booking must be made by telephoning hotel reservations at (0)2890 271066 citing the code ID189571.
Conference Fees
Conference fees include attendance at the conference and all coffee breaks, lunches, dinners, receptions and a social outing but exclude accommodation.
There are five categories of conference fee:
(a) Conference fee for IALT members: €195 / £170
This fee is for existing members of the IALT (who have a standing order for IALT membership or have recently purchased membership through Paypal).
(b) Conference fee including membership of the IALT: €215 / £188
This fee is for those wishing to attend the conference but who are not already IALT members. It includes membership from 1 st October 2022 to 30 th September 2023.
(c) Conference Day Rate: €115/£100
This rate is available to members who wish to attend either the Friday or Saturday of the
conference, including lunches. Please note that attendance at the annual dinner will incur an additional charge for those paying the day rate.
Delegates who are not members and who wish to avail of this rate should purchase membership either by standing order or by Paypal (€20/£18 per annum).
(d) Conference Saturday Day Rate including Dinner: €150/£125
This rate is available to members who wish to attend the Saturday conference, including lunch and the annual dinner.

(e) Discounted Student rate: €100/£90 (for Postgraduate Members)
‘Postgraduate member’ for this purpose means a postgraduate research student who is a member of the IALT who is pursuing a research degree, excluding staff who are employed full-time in a teaching/research role.
This reduced fee entitles Postgraduate Members to attend all the events and meals of the
conference from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon.
Postgraduates who are not members must pay the membership fee of €20/£18 in addition to the discounted student rate of €100/£90.

Matheson Postgraduate Scholarships
Three scholarships are available to postgraduate students wishing to present a paper or a poster at the 2022. IALT Annual Conference. These scholarships will cover the cost of accommodation, reasonable travel costs within the island of Ireland, and the conference fee of the successful applicants.
Scholarship applications will be judged on the basis of the coherence, originality, and quality of the submitted abstract. While previous winners of the scholarships are eligible to apply and their abstracts will be considered, preference will be given to new applicants.
Those interested in applying for this scholarship should email an abstract to IALT2022@qub.ac.uk by 1 October 2022. Applicants should set out the title of their proposed paper/poster, their institutional affiliation and an abstract of no more than 300 words. ‘Matheson Postgraduate Scholarship Application’ should be specified as the subject of the email.
