Call for Papers – Annual Conference 2021
Annual Conference of the Irish Association of Law Teachers, 2021
University College Cork, 19-21 November 2021
‘The Law and Crisis’
Following the cancellation of the Annual Conference 2020, the Irish Association of Law Teachers moved events online for 2020-2021, running a successful seminar series culminating in a Spring Discourse analysing the local and global dimensions of the legal academic’s role. We are delighted to announce the 2021 Annual Conference will be held in University College Cork from 19-21 November 2021.
In line with the general reopening of society and of higher education in particular, we are hopeful that the event will take place. However, as with all public and private activities, it is subject to any changes in public health guidelines.
Conference Theme
The term crisis is increasingly used to describe events and phenomena which confront our contemporary world. Recent world history can be written as a series of crisis: financial; climate; humanitarian; refugee; housing and arguably democratic. COVID-19 is perhaps the most dramatic and immediate of these events.
The law performs a number of social, economic and regulatory functions. It is designed to produce stability in social relations, regulate risks and provide governance capacity. The law can contribute to and exacerbate crises but it can also provide frameworks to avoid, manage or overcome crises. Crises confront the law with the challenge of providing capacity to act and govern while ensuring respect for the rule of law and the protection of individual rights. The IALT Conference 2021 takes as its theme, ‘The Law and Crisis’ and invites papers and panels on this topic, exploring the interaction between the law and crisis in various fields.
The Plenary session on Saturday 20 November will be a moderated panel discussion on the theme of the conference. Confirmed speakers include:
- Professor Roger Cotterrell, Anniversary Professor of Legal Theory, Queen Mary University, London
- Professor Áine Ryall, Co-Director of the Centre of Law and the Environment, University College Cork
- Professor Blanaid Clarke, McCann Fitzgerald Chair in Corporate Law, School of Law, Trinity College Dublin
Conference Format
The IALT conference is famous for its friendly and supportive atmosphere. Many speakers use the opportunity to present work in progress.
The conference will begin on Friday afternoon with a buffet dinner in the River Lee Hotel, close to the main UCC campus. On Saturday morning there will be parallel sessions, with the plenary lecture and roundtable in the afternoon. In line with IALT tradition, there will be a cultural outing after the plenary session. The AGM of the Association will be held at 6pm on Saturday, at which the Council for the 2021-2022 year will be elected. The AGM will be followed by a drinks reception and Gala Dinner. The Kevin Boyle Book Prize will be awarded at the Conference Dinner. There will be more parallel sessions on Sunday, and the conference will conclude with Sunday lunch.
