Annual Conference of the IALT, 2017 – Dunboyne Castle Hotel and Spa, 24th to 26th November 2017


The Irish Association of Law Teachers is delighted to announce that the IALT Conference 2017 will take place at the Dunboyne Castle Hotel and Spa, Co. Meath from Friday 24th to Sunday 26th of November 2017. As usual, the conference will have a strong academic tone, with a series of keynote and plenary sessions, alongside parallel sessions catering for a wide range of papers on discrete areas of law. The Annual Conference is also widely valued as an opportunity for social interaction, and this year will be no exception.

Conference Format

The conference will open on Friday night with a welcome reception at Pugin Hall, Maynooth University, followed by dinner. Parallel panels of papers will feature on Saturday and Sunday mornings/early afternoon with a plenary session after lunch on Saturday. There will be an outing on Saturday afternoon, followed by the gala dinner (dress code: elegant/smart/Seasonal Jumper) on Saturday night. There will be plenty of opportunities for networking and establishing contacts with colleagues researching and teaching in other institutions in Ireland and abroad.

Theme and Call for Papers

The Council welcomes papers on any legal topic from IALT members and other academics and researchers. The theme of the conference is [TBC]. Participants are also encouraged to propose and organise panels addressing specific themes in any area of law (proposers of panels will be expected to organise the relevant panels). A call for papers and posters has now been issued. Those interested in delivering a paper should contact Dr Claire Hamilton at claire.hamilton [at] Applicants should set out the title of their proposed paper (which may be provisional) and an abstract of no more than 500 words. Proposals for panels (of no more than 4 speakers) are strongly encouraged and will be given priority. The deadline for proposals for papers is [TO BE CONFIRMED].

Venue and Accommodation

Dunboyne Castle is situated in Co. Meath, a short distance from Dublin. It is accessible by train from Connolly Station in Dublin. It is close to Trim Castle, Maynooth University, and the Boyne Valley.  Please click here for further details.

Conference Fee and Booking Conference fees (to include attendance at the conference and all coffee breaks, lunches, dinners, receptions and a social outing but excluding accommodation) for the entire weekend are:

For IALT members: €150 (to get the members’ rate, you can simply join up to the IALT at (Fee TBC)

Discounted Student rate: €100*

Day ticket only (Friday evening only or Saturday only excluding gala dinner, or Sunday only) €50 (including lunch)

*'Postgraduate member’ for this purpose means a postgraduate research student who is a member of the IALT who is pursuing a research degree, excluding staff who are employed full-time in a teaching/research role. 

PhD Scholarship

2 scholarships are available for PhD students wishing to present a paper at the 2016 IALT Annual Conference. These scholarships will cover the cost of accommodation, reasonable travel costs within Ireland, and the conference fee of the successful applicants.
