Kevin Boyle Book Prizes

The Irish Association of Law Teachers invites nominations for the 2017 Kevin Boyle Book Prizes for Outstanding Legal Scholarship. Nominations will close on 30 June 2017.

The IALT will award each of two prizes to an Ordinary Member of the IALT (who meets the requirements set out below) who has published a book that is deemed to have made a particularly outstanding contribution to the understanding of law. The prizes will be awarded at the IALT annual conference in November 2017.

The closing date for nominations for the 2017 prize is 30 June 2017.

There are two categories this year, and a separate prize of €500 for the winner of each:
A. Best text written primarily for students and/or practitioners.
B. Best text written primarily for academics and researchers

RULES
1. The competition is open to Ordinary Members of the Association who meet the following requirements:
• The member must be a currently paid up Ordinary Member of the Association and
• The member
- On the date on which the application is made, must be employed (either part-time or full-time) by an institution of higher education or research institution on the island of Ireland (Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland); or
- Must have been, at any time, an employee of such an institution (either part-time or full-time) for a period or periods amounting to at least 2 academic years; or
- Has, at any time prior to 30 June 2017, graduated with a Ph.D. from any institution of higher education or research institution on the island of Ireland (Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland).

2. A member of the Association must nominate the book for it to be considered. Members may nominate their own books.

3. Nominees must send a completed nomination form together with two copies of the book to the President of the Association on or before the expiry of the closing date for nominations, which is 30 June 2017. The Association regrets that it cannot return any copies provided. Please send by post to Dr Claire Hamilton, Department of Law, New House, National University of Ireland, Maynooth, Co. Kildare

4. Nominations that are not accompanied by at least two copies of the relevant book will not be considered.

5. Books that are jointly authored by no more than three persons are eligible.

6. The prize may be divided between co-authors of a single work or between the authors of separate works that are deemed to be of equal merit. The Association reserves the right not to make an award in a given year.

7. Books will be eligible if they are original works that have been published between 1 June 2014 and 30 June 2017 inclusive. (Books that were published between 1 May 2012 and 30 May 2014 were eligible for the last book prize.)

8. Books previously entered for the prize are not eligible for consideration.

9. Second or subsequent editions of a text published within the relevant period are eligible for consideration, provided that previous editions have not previously been nominated for the prize. Reprints, reissues, conference proceedings and multi-authored collections of essays, however, are not eligible for consideration. Books published by or on behalf of the Association are not eligible for consideration.

10. The President of the Association will nominate the judging panel. The decision of the judging panel on eligibility and any other matter arising from the competition shall be final.
