Annual Conference of the IALT, 2015 – Salthill Hotel, Galway 27-29 November 2015

UPDATE: We are still accepting proposals for papers for the IALT conference, with an extended deadline of Monday 12th October 2015

The Irish Association of Law Teachers is delighted to announce that the IALT Conference 2015 will take place at the Salthill Hotel, Salthill, Galway, from Friday 27th to Sunday 29th of November 2015. Frequently called Ireland’s most Irish city, Galway is a coastal metropolis where culture and literature have long flourished.

As usual, the conference will have a strong academic tone, with a series of keynote and plenary sessions, alongside parallel sessions catering for a wide range of papers on discrete areas of law. The Annual Conference is also widely valued as an opportunity for social interaction, and this year will be no exception.

Conference Format

The conference will open with the awarding of the IALT Kevin Boyle Book Prize for Outstanding Legal Scholarship on Friday night. This will be followed by a buffet dinner. There will be an outing on Saturday afternoon to Ireland’s longest running Christmas Market, the Galway Continental Christmas Market in Eyre Square. This outing will be followed by the gala dinner (dress code: elegant/smart/Seasonal Jumper) on Saturday night. There will be plenty of opportunities for networking and establishing contacts with colleagues researching and teaching in other institutions in Ireland and abroad. Parallel panels of papers will feature on Saturday and Sunday mornings/early afternoon with a plenary session after lunch on Saturday. The AGM of the IALT will take place following lunch on Sunday.

Theme and Call for Papers

The theme of this year’s conference is ‘The Law Lecturer: Enhancing Academic Life’ to include discussions on a number of different topics relating to the changing role of the legal academic. The Council welcomes papers on any legal theme from IALT members and other academics and researchers. Participants are also encouraged to propose panels addressing specific themes in any area of law, and especially (though not exclusively) on the conference theme. A call for papers and posters has now been issued. Those interested in delivering a paper should contact Dr Charles O'Mahony at charles.omahony [at] nuigalway.ie. Applicants should set out the title of their proposed paper (which may be provisional) and an abstract of no more than 500 words. Proposals for panels (of no more than 4 speakers) are strongly encouraged.  The deadline for offers of papers for the conference has been extended to Monday 12th October 2015.
